Plan Sutherland River Protected Area with Babine Lake boat access, rough roads, river paddling, fishing, hunting, Tetzalto Mountain routes, and wetland habitat.
Sutherland River Protected Area protects adjacent parcels along the Sutherland River and Babine Lake, beside Sutherland River Park. BC Parks says the area offers river-based recreation and protects a river with important habitat for spawning fish and other wildlife.
Most visitors reach the area by boat via Babine Lake.
Why Visit Sutherland River Protected Area
This protected area is best understood as part of the Sutherland River and Babine Lake conservation corridor. BC Parks notes that it lies in the Babine Uplands Ecosection and helps protect a major unregulated river, a large inland river delta, and extensive wetlands.
Recreation is low-service and self-reliant. BC Parks lists canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hunting, and hiking access to the top of Tetzalto Mountain from adjacent logging roads, while warning that there are no maintained trails in the park.
Things To Do
Paddle where lake and river conditions allow, fish with the correct licence, hunt under current regulations, use adjacent logging roads for careful hiking access, and observe wetland and river wildlife from a distance.
Planning Notes
All road access can be hazardous due to rough conditions. There is no boat launch in the protected area; BC Parks points boaters to Pinkut Creek Marine Site and Babine Lake Marine Park’s Pendleton Bay site. The east end of Babine Lake is shallow in areas. Respect private property and Indian Reserve No. 13 along the shoreline, and plan for remote travel with maps, communications, and conservative weather judgment. Treat unmaintained hiking access from logging roads as route-finding, not a signed trail.
