Plan Sutherland River Park with Babine Lake boat access, river paddling, fishing, Tetzalto Mountain hiking, rough roads, shallow water, hunting, and wildlife.

Sutherland River Park protects adjacent parcels along about 50 kilometres of the Sutherland River and Babine Lake. BC Parks says the park provides river-based recreation while protecting important spawning-fish and wildlife habitat.

Most visitors access the park by boat via Babine Lake.

Why Visit Sutherland River Park

Sutherland River Park is a remote Skeena East option for paddling, fishing, rough-road access, and quiet river exploration. BC Parks lists canoeing and kayaking opportunities, fishing, hunting, and possible hiking access to the top of Tetzalto Mountain from adjacent logging roads.

The conservation values are substantial. The park and neighbouring protected area lie in the Babine Uplands Ecosection and protect a major unregulated river, a large inland river delta, and extensive wetlands. The Sutherland River is an important spawning river for sockeye, kokanee, and steelhead in Babine Lake, with habitat for moose, grizzly bears, and wolves.

Things To Do

Canoe, kayak, fish with the proper licence, hunt during open seasons, explore only where access is safe, and hike toward Tetzalto Mountain from adjacent logging roads if conditions allow.

Planning Notes

All road access can be hazardous because of rough road conditions. The park has no boat launch; nearby options are at Pinkut Creek Marine Site and Babine Lake Marine Park’s Pendleton Bay site. The east end of Babine Lake is shallow in areas, so boaters need caution. Respect private property and Indian Reserve No. 13 along Babine Lake, and confirm fishing and hunting rules before travel. Carry extra fuel, water, and communication gear for the forest road approach.
