Why Visit Sustut Protected Area
Sustut Protected Area is most relevant to visitors planning serious remote travel or researching northern conservation lands. BC Parks notes that the Connelly and Hogem ranges of the Omineca Mountains are protected here, along with mature, old-growth, and wetland forests representing the moist cold Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir biogeoclimatic subzone.
The landscape also includes volcanic features such as fumaroles and basalt cliffs. Salmon and steelhead occur in the Atsitka and Sustut rivers, adding important aquatic habitat value to the mountain setting.

There are no developed trails or services. Pets must be leashed, and BC Parks says backcountry areas are not suitable for dogs or other pets because of wildlife issues and potential problems with bears. Treat access as expedition travel: confirm aircraft logistics, weather, emergency communication, survival gear, legal hunting seasons, and pickup plans. Respect the asserted territories of Carrier Sekani Tribal Council, Gitxsan First Nation, and Tsay Keh Dene Nation. Avoid disturbing basalt cliffs, fumaroles, wetlands, and river habitat while travelling through the area in any season.
