Plan Surge Narrows Park near Quadra Island with boat-only access, tidal rapids, expert kayaking, wilderness camping, rockfish rules, pets, and no facilities.
Surge Narrows Park is on the south end of Maurelle Island, east of Quadra Island off central Vancouver Island. BC Parks describes high tidal changes, many reefs, rich marine life, and tidal rapids created where two flood tides converge.
The park is undeveloped, boat-access only, and has no facilities.
Why Visit Surge Narrows Park
Surge Narrows is a striking marine park for very experienced paddlers and boaters who can plan around powerful tidal current. BC Parks notes that sea urchins, sea cucumbers, sea stars, and anemones flourish in the park’s conditions, while the tidal rapids give the park its name.
Random wilderness camping is permitted on upland portions of the park. The surrounding waters also offer ocean fishing opportunities for species such as rockfish and salmon, subject to federal and provincial regulations and Rockfish Conservation Area restrictions.
Things To Do
Canoe or kayak only with advanced tidal-current skills, travel through Surge Narrows at slack tide, avoid Seymour Narrows, camp in undeveloped upland areas, fish under current rules, watch intertidal life, and explore by boat from Okisollo Channel or Hoskyn Channel.
Planning Notes
Currents can reach 16 knots and up to 14 knots on the ebb. Anyone accessing the park should consult current tidal charts and use marine charts 3537 and 3539. Pets must be leashed, and backcountry areas are not suitable for pets because of wildlife and bear concerns. Carry all water, shelter, food, communications, waste bags, and rescue gear; do not count on facilities or easy landings. Time crossings conservatively.
