Why Visit Sugarbowl-Grizzly Den Park

This park is a regional backcountry hub for hiking, skiing, cabins, and mountain routes. BC Parks identifies Sugarbowl, Viking Ridge, Grizzly Den, and Raven Lake access points, with trail and avalanche mapping available for trip planning. The Grand Canyon of the Fraser also has heritage significance tied to the Overlanders’ journey to the Cariboo gold fields and the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway.

Visitors come for old-growth forest, subalpine and alpine travel, winter touring, backcountry cabins, wildlife habitat, and hunting during open seasons.

Things To Do

Hike developed trails, plan cabin trips through the Prince George Backcountry Recreation Society, backcountry ski, snowshoe, navigate alpine routes, watch wildlife from a distance, and hunt under current regulations.

Planning Notes

There is no potable water. Watch for surface fissures, which can be hidden by snow and may be more than three metres deep. Avalanches are a hazard for winter users, and visitors get lost in the park every year, especially in poor weather. Carry maps, compass or GPS, rain gear, water, food, and emergency overnight gear. Outside open fires are illegal; cabin firewood is for cabin stoves only. Check trailhead notices before leaving Highway 16.
