Plan Stikine River Park with canyon viewpoints, upper-river paddling, Telegraph Creek Road access, fishing, horseback authorization, hunting, and strict safety.

Stikine River Park protects an 80-kilometre steep-walled canyon carved through sedimentary and volcanic rock. BC Parks calls this geological feature the Grand Canyon of the north, with the wild Stikine River flowing at the bottom of a chasm that can reach 300 metres deep.

The park also creates a protected corridor between Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Park and Mount Edziza Park.

Why Visit Stikine River Park

Stikine River Park is a remote northern landscape for canyon viewpoints, wilderness-scale river scenery, and careful Highway 37 or Telegraph Creek Road travel. A pullout about 60 kilometres west of Dease Lake leads to a short trail and viewpoint over the Tuya River Valley.

The area is culturally significant to the Tahltan Nation. BC Parks notes that archaeological finds such as obsidian, tools, and other artifacts must be left in place and reported to BC Parks or the Tahltan Central Government office.

Things To Do

Hike to signed viewpoints, canoe or kayak only on the upper Stikine River where permitted, fish year-round with the proper licence, ride horses only with a Letter of Authorization, and hunt under current regulations and Limited Entry Hunting restrictions.

Planning Notes

Do not approach the canyon rim casually: sharp drop-offs and broken rock make it dangerous. Downstream of the Highway 37 bridge and boat launch, the Stikine River canyon is unnavigable by all watercraft. Telegraph Creek Road is steep and narrow in places. Off-road vehicles, ATVs, and snowmobiles are prohibited. Buy a freshwater fishing licence before entering the Highway 37 corridor because internet and printer access can be limited.
