Steelhead Park is 40 kilometres west of Kamloops on Highway 1, at the southwest end of Kamloops Lake near Savona. BC Parks describes it as a convenient overnight camping and picnicking stop for travellers, boaters, and anglers.

The park has 240 metres of beach on Kamloops Lake and 1,000 metres of frontage along the Thompson River.

Why Visit Steelhead Park

Steelhead is a small but useful Thompson-region base for lake and river recreation. Campers use it as a Highway 1 overnight stop, while anglers and boaters come for Kamloops Lake and the head of the Thompson River. BC Parks lists swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing for trout, salmon, and steelhead, waterskiing, windsurfing, cycling on roadways, and short walking opportunities.

The site also has cultural and historical values. BC Parks notes First Nations fishing connections dating back 10,000 years, an early southern interior homestead, a stagecoach depot, ferry landing, historic buildings, and a cemetery.

Things To Do

Camp, picnic, swim without lifeguards, paddle Kamloops Lake, fish with the proper licence, waterski, windsurf, cycle on roadways, and explore the lakeshore and riverfront while staying on signed routes.

Planning Notes

The hot, dry climate can cause sun overexposure, so bring shade, sunscreen, and water. Use caution when swimming or boating near the end of the beach where lake water drains into the river mouth. Windstorms can make narrow Kamloops Lake rough for paddlers. Pets must be leashed and kept out of beach areas and buildings. E-bikes are not allowed on trails and are restricted to park roads or other motorized-use areas.
