Plan Stamp River Park near Port Alberni with riverside camping, Stamp Falls trails, salmon viewing, fishing closures, bear safety, fast water, and pet rules.
Stamp River Park is northwest of Port Alberni on central Vancouver Island, reached from Highway 4 via Beaver Creek Road. BC Parks describes a riverside park where hiking trails weave through lush forest, rapids, Stamp Falls, and Money’s Pool.
The annual salmon run below Stamp Falls is one of the park’s main draws.
Why Visit Stamp River Park
Stamp River is a strong choice for campers, hikers, salmon watchers, and anglers who want a forested river setting close to Port Alberni. Starting in late August, sockeye begin moving through the falls and fish ladders, with coho and chinook continuing into December. Black bears also come to the river to feed, so wildlife awareness is essential.
Trails include a half-kilometre route from the day-use parking lot to the fish ladder and waterfall, about two kilometres of interlinked trails beyond Stamp Falls, and the 7.5-kilometre one-way Sayachlas t’a saa’nim trail upstream of the campground.
Things To Do
Camp, hike to the fish ladder, read interpretive salmon signage, watch salmon from the viewpoint in late summer and fall, fish where open with the correct licence, and cycle only on roadways.
Planning Notes
Do not swim, float, or boat in the park or above the waterfalls. The river has high waterfalls, strong current, fast water, slippery rocks, cliffs, and slick banks. Fishing is closed from 200 metres above to 500 metres below Stamp Falls from June 15 to November 15, and regulations change regularly. Pets must be leashed and kept out of beach areas and buildings. Motor vehicles are not allowed on trails or in the day-use area.
