Plan Spectacle Lake Park north of Victoria with swimming, accessible lake trail, canoeing, trout fishing, winter skating, mature forest, wetlands, and pet rules.

Spectacle Lake Park is 30 kilometres north of Victoria, just off Highway 1 on southern Vancouver Island. BC Parks says the park includes mature forest, lake, and wetlands in the Nanaimo Lowlands Ecosection.

It is one of the few accessible freshwater lakes in the area that allows fishing, swimming, and winter skating when conditions are cold enough.

Why Visit Spectacle Lake Park

Spectacle Lake is a compact day-use park for freshwater swimming, an easy lake loop, paddling, fishing, and winter visits. The main trail circles the lake for more than two kilometres, using wooden bridges across creeks and marshy areas, and much of the trail system is wheelchair-accessible.

BC Parks notes that Spectacle Lake offers the only eastern brook trout fishing on Vancouver Island and is regularly stocked with cutthroat trout. The lake is spring-fed and often one of the first to freeze in winter.

Things To Do

Walk the lake trail, swim without a designated swimming area or lifeguards, canoe or kayak, fish with the proper licence, skate only when ice is reliably safe, watch wetland wildlife, and connect carefully to nearby regional trails outside the park.

Planning Notes

No campfires are permitted. Pets must be leashed and kept out of beach areas and park buildings. The park is cooperatively managed by the Cowichan Valley Regional District, so services and facilities may differ from other BC Parks. Check current ice, fishing, trail, and day-use conditions before travelling. Use wooden bridges and marked routes to protect marshy lake edges, and carry a licence before fishing for stocked trout.
