Plan Spatsizi Headwaters Park with alpine lakes, Spatsizi River headwaters, hiking, fishing, hunting, permitted horseback use, helicopter access, and Tahltan values.
Spatsizi Headwaters Park was designated to protect the headwaters of the Spatsizi River, upper-elevation glacial lakes, and alpine meadows. BC Parks also lists hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities in this Skeena East park.
The park is in an area of significant spiritual value for the Tahltan First Nation and lies within asserted Tahltan and Carrier Sekani territories.
Why Visit Spatsizi Headwaters Park
Spatsizi Headwaters is a remote alpine park for self-reliant travellers. BC Parks says the BCR railgrade passes within three kilometres of the park and follows the Klappan River, making foot or horse travel possible along the grade. Helicopter access is also possible.
The park protects primarily alpine terrain in the Eastern Skeena Mountains Ecosection, including glacial lakes and meadows. It also connects geographically and historically with the broader Stikine Country protected areas.
Things To Do
Hike, view wildlife, fish with the proper licence, hunt during open seasons where regulations allow, and ride horses only after obtaining the required Letter of Permission from BC Parks.
Planning Notes
Horse use requires a Letter of Permission from the BC Parks Stikine Area Office. Pets must be leashed, and backcountry areas are not suitable for pets because of wildlife concerns. Plan for remote access, limited services, mountain weather, river crossings, and emergency communication. Respect Tahltan spiritual values, carry navigation and food-storage gear, and confirm hunting and fishing regulations before travelling. Helicopter plans should minimize disturbance and follow current BC Parks direction. Treat the BCR railgrade approach as remote travel, not a maintained trailhead, and confirm pickup plans before departure.
