Plan South Okanagan Grasslands Protected Area near Osoyoos with Mt Kobau trails, rare grasslands, wildlife viewing, fishing, riding, heat safety, and no camping.

South Okanagan Grasslands Protected Area is in Richter Pass, about nine kilometres west of Osoyoos on Highway 3. BC Parks says it protects dry grasslands and open forests representing one of Canada’s four most endangered ecosystems.

The protected area comprises four sites: Mt. Kobau, Kilpoola, Chopaka East, and Chopaka West.

Why Visit South Okanagan Grasslands Protected Area

This protected area is a rare-ecosystem destination with strong hiking and wildlife-viewing value. BC Parks notes that it protects all known Canadian sites of at least three plant species and habitat for many rare and endangered birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.

Mt. Kobau has two hiking trails from the summit parking lot. The Mt. Kobau Lookout Trail leads to the former fire lookout site with views over the Okanagan Valley. The three-kilometre Chopaka Lookout Trail crosses mixed subalpine forest and open grasslands with Similkameen and Cascade views.

Things To Do

Hike Mt. Kobau trails, walk old roads where permitted, fish Kilpoola Lake with the proper licence, watch wildlife, ride horses, cycle only on designated roadways, and hunt during open seasons where regulations allow.

Planning Notes

Camping, campfires, mushroom harvesting, and mine-adit entry are prohibited. Heat exposure is a serious risk, and no water is available in the park. Motor-vehicle access is tightly limited by site: Chopaka East and West are closed to motor vehicles, Kilpoola is closed except Kruger Mountain Road, and most Mt. Kobau roads are closed except the main summit road. Respect private and private conservation lands between sites. Stay on durable routes to protect fragile grassland soils.
