Plan Small River Caves Park near McBride and Valemount with remote karst, hazardous caves, BC Parks permission, hunting, logging road traffic, and bat protection.

Small River Caves Park protects a provincially important karst and cave system on the west side of the Small River drainage, high above the valley bottom. BC Parks says the park was created through the Robson Valley Land and Resource Management Plan and the Protected Areas Strategy.

The cave complex is remote, difficult to access, and considered very dangerous.

Why Visit Small River Caves Park

This park is for highly experienced cavers and careful protected-area users, not casual exploration. BC Parks states that caving should only be attempted by very experienced spelunkers, and cavers must get permission from BC Parks before entering the cave system.

The 1,818-hectare park sits in the transition between Engelmann Spruce-Subalpine Fir and Alpine Tundra zones. It protects fragile karst features, cave habitat, and high-elevation ecosystems, making caution part of the conservation work.

Things To Do

Plan caving only if you have advanced skills, proper equipment, permission from BC Parks, and decontaminated gear to reduce White-Nose Syndrome risk for bats. Hunting is allowed during open seasons under provincial regulations. If you are not an experienced caver, choose observation outside cave entrances rather than entry.

Planning Notes

The closest communities include McBride and Valemount. Small River logging road accesses the drainage, and visitors must stay alert for logging truck traffic. Do not enter caves with clothing or gear used in caves east of the Rocky Mountains. Check hunting rules, cave access permission, weather, road status, and emergency plans before travelling, and leave fragile cave and karst features undisturbed.
