Plan Skihist Park near Lytton with shaded camping, Thompson Canyon views, hiking, swimming, fishing, wildlife viewing, generators, and river safety notes.
Skihist Park sits above the Thompson River near Lytton on the Trans-Canada Highway. BC Parks describes a campground with spectacular views of the Thompson Canyon, tree-shaded sites, and access to short trails.
The park name comes from the Nlaka’pamux word meaning jumping over the edge, referring to a local legend about a battle between First Nations people.
Why Visit Skihist Park
Skihist is a practical canyon campground with a strong sense of place. Some campsites overlook the Thompson River, while others sit in shaded forest. BC Parks lists hiking, swimming, fishing, wildlife viewing, and cycling on roads.
Trails include the short Skihist Trail and the Creek Trail, both under one kilometre. A community swimming pool in nearby Lytton is available in summer, while river recreation requires extreme caution because local rivers are fast and hazardous.
Things To Do
Camp, hike short trails, view the Thompson Canyon, fish with the proper licence, cycle on roadways, watch birds and canyon wildlife, and use the park as a stop on Highway 1 travel. Hunting is not permitted in the park.
Planning Notes
The entrance is directly off Highway 1, six kilometres east of Lytton. There are no lifeguards, and the Thompson and Fraser rivers can be very dangerous. Generator use is limited to 9 am to 11 am and 6 pm to 8 pm. Pets must be leashed and kept out of beach areas and park buildings. Summer heat can be intense in the canyon, so carry water for short walks as well as camp.
