Plan Scatter River Old Growth Park with old-growth spruce, Liard River access, Grand Canyon rapids, fishing, horseback riding, hunting, and winter use.

Scatter River Old Growth Park protects a remote Peace region landscape along the Liard River Corridor in northeastern British Columbia. BC Parks describes high upland plateau, muskeg, the Grand Canyon rapids, river-bottom old-growth spruce forest, and ecosystems shaped by large fires in the Liard River valley.

The park is near Liard River Hot Springs Park but is much wilder.

Why Visit Scatter River Old Growth Park

Scatter River is for experienced wilderness travellers who want big northern landscapes and low development. BC Parks highlights the Grand Canyon of the Liard as a 30-kilometre stretch of river with dangerous rapids and strong visual quality.

The park provides habitat for moose, grizzly bear, Rocky Mountain elk, furbearers, northern long-eared bats, and other wildlife. The official page describes access by the old road to Nordquist Lake and Elk Mountain, by river routes from the Fort Nelson River, Sulphur Creek, or the Toad River, and by ATV, foot, horse, or boat.

Things To Do

Fish for species such as arctic grayling, chum salmon, bull trout, inconnu, lake whitefish, mountain whitefish, northern pike, and burbot with the proper licence. Experienced riders can plan backcountry horseback trips, hunters can use the park during open seasons, and winter recreation is listed as available.

Planning Notes

There are no designated horseback trails, so riders and hikers need wilderness navigation skills. River travel must account for dangerous rapids and changing conditions. Pets must be leashed, and dogs should be controlled around wildlife. Confirm hunting, fishing, ATV route, weather, and access information before travelling.
