Plan Sandwell Park on Gabriola Island with a short beach trail, sandy low-tide swimming, dune protection, day use, pet rules, and no overnight camping.
Sandwell Park is a small day-use park on Gabriola Island near Nanaimo. BC Parks describes it as a place with a long sandy beach, broad views, and a fragile dune ecosystem reached by a short trail from the parking lot.
To reach the park, the official directions use North Road, Barrett Road, Strand Road, and The Strand.
Why Visit Sandwell Park
Sandwell is a simple island beach outing. The short walk from the parking area drops visitors toward open shore, where low tide exposes the sandy beach that makes the park popular for swimming and quiet shoreline time.
The park also protects dune habitat, so the beach setting is more sensitive than it may first appear. BC Parks notes that the park is named for Gabriola pioneer John Sandwell and makes clear that the area is for day use only. There is no overnight camping, and fires are not allowed.
Because the beach is close to Nanaimo by way of Gabriola Island, it works well as a careful low-tide stop rather than a full-service destination.
Things To Do
Walk the short access trail, enjoy the beach at low tide, swim only with personal caution, picnic, photograph shoreline views, and explore the sand-and-dune edge without damaging vegetation. Clam digging is no longer permitted in the park.
Planning Notes
There is no roped swimming area and no lifeguard, so swimmers are responsible for their own safety. Pets must be leashed and kept out of beach areas and park buildings. E-bikes are not allowed on trails. Stay off fragile dune vegetation, pack out what you bring, and plan around tides because the beach experience changes significantly with water level.
