Plan Rugged Point Marine Park by boat with Kyuquot Sound beaches, wilderness camping, anchorage, surfing, salmon fishing, old-growth forest, and bear safety.
Rugged Point Marine Park is on the west coast of northern Vancouver Island at the southwest end of Kyuquot Channel, in the mouth of Kyuquot Sound. BC Parks says access is by water only from Kyuquot, Fair Harbour, or the Artlish River boat launch.
Boaters can reference marine chart 3682.
The closest communities listed by BC Parks are Kyuquot and Zeballos.
Why Visit Rugged Point Marine Park
Rugged Point combines exposed Pacific shoreline with protected north-side beaches. The wild, surf-swept outer coast contrasts with quiet beaches and safe anchorage options, while Dixie Cove, eight kilometres east, offers more sheltered anchorage in bad weather.
The undeveloped park also has old-growth forest with large Douglas firs, walk-in wilderness camping, a small day-use and picnic area, a pit toilet, bear-proof food cache, open-walled shelter, and fresh water from Kapoose Creek. Activities include hiking, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, salmon fishing, surfing, and camping.
Things To Do
Arrive by boat, camp in the wilderness area, use the five-minute maintained trail to the west-facing beaches, paddle or kayak, swim without a designated area, fish for salmon under current regulations, surf with water taxi access from Kyuquot or Zeballos, and use anchorages carefully.
Planning Notes
Store any fish catch in boats at anchor overnight to avoid attracting black bears to the camping area. Pets must be leashed, and backcountry areas are not suitable for pets. The park lies within the traditional territory of the Ehattesaht First Nation and beside Kyuquot/Checleset First Nation territory; BC Parks encourages contacting the band office in Kyuquot before exploring.
