Plan Quatsino Park on northern Vancouver Island with marine access, kayak haul-outs, old-growth coastline, Koprino Lake cautions, fishing, and no facilities.
Quatsino Park protects undeveloped coastline on the north side of Quatsino Sound on northern Vancouver Island. BC Parks describes scenic protected shore, large old-growth trees, Koprino Harbour, and the Koprino River estuary.
The park is primarily marine access, but it can also be reached by active forestry roads from the Port Hardy and Holberg area nearby.
Why Visit Quatsino Park
Quatsino Park fits experienced kayakers, boaters, and wilderness travellers moving through the Quatsino Sound touring route. BC Parks notes several good kayak and canoe haul-outs, ocean swimming, fishing under provincial and federal regulations, and an undeveloped coastal setting that can work as an overnight stop or picnic site.
The park also protects wildlife values. The Koprino River estuary is important fish-rearing and waterfowl habitat, while the park contains nesting and feeding habitat used by many bald eagles. Black bears are common, and coastal black-tailed deer and cougars also use the area.
Things To Do
Kayak or canoe the coast if conditions are suitable, use haul-outs without expecting facilities, swim in the ocean without lifeguards, fish with current regulations and licences, visit Koprino Lake only with caution, hunt in season, and view wildlife from a respectful distance.
Planning Notes
There are no established campsites, maintained trails, vehicle-accessible camping facilities, cycling opportunities, or boat launch in the park. Surface water from streams or Koprino Lake must be boiled, filtered, or treated. Logging trucks have the right of way on access roads. Pets must be leashed and kept away from drinking water sources.
