Why Visit Pooley Conservancy

Pooley Conservancy is a central coast marine and forest landscape known for small watersheds, lakes draining directly to the ocean, old-growth forested hills, subalpine areas, salmon creeks, Kermode bear habitat, and boat havens.

The conservancy shares borders with Fiordland Conservancy. James and Windy Bays are listed as Provincial Boat Havens, with James Bay providing safe anchorage and a waypoint en route to Fiordland. The estuaries are frequented by the white Kermode bear, and salmon use the main creeks at James and Windy Bays.

Pooley Conservancy is within Kitasoo First Nation traditional territory and is co-managed under an agreement between the Kitasoo Nation and British Columbia. Windy and James Bays hold high cultural, heritage, and fisheries values for the Kitasoo/XaiXais First Nation.

Things To Do

Travel by boat, use James or Windy Bay as safe anchorage where appropriate, hike while staying on designated routes, observe estuaries and wildlife from a distance, and hunt during open seasons under BC regulations.

Planning Notes

Plan as a self-sufficient marine trip. Bring charts, weather planning, drinking water, food, emergency gear, and communications. Respect cultural values, avoid disturbing salmon streams or estuaries, keep distance from bears and wolves, and follow all hunting regulations.
