Plan Pine River Breaks Park near Chetwynd with grassland slopes, Pine River boating, wildlife winter range, no drinking water, no trails, ORV ban, and hunting.

Pine River Breaks Park is on the north side of the Pine River, roughly halfway between Chetwynd and East Pine River near Sundance Lakes on Highway 97. BC Parks says visitors can reach the area by a short hike from Sundance Pit Road or by boat along the Pine River.

The park protects a scenic Peace Lowlands landscape of open grassland hillsides, aspen, and spruce.

Why Visit Pine River Breaks Park

Pine River Breaks is a quiet backcountry-style park for people interested in grassland scenery, river travel, wildlife habitat, and ungulate winter range. Mixed forests of trembling aspen and spruce provide shelter for mule deer and other ungulates in winter.

The park is on the south-facing side of the Pine River and protects important wintering habitat, unusual glacial landforms, esker formations, and kettle ponds. Wildlife listed by BC Parks includes mule deer, white-tailed deer, moose, coyote, and occasional black bear. First Nations of the Treaty 8 Tribal Association have traditionally used the area.

The landscape is sensitive winter range.

Things To Do

Hike without developed trails if prepared, paddle or boat the Pine River, fish with the proper licence, watch wildlife, cycle where allowed, ride horseback, and hunt during open seasons under BC regulations.

Planning Notes

Bring drinking water because potable water is not available. Off-road vehicles are prohibited, including ATVs, off-road motorcycles, snowmobiles, and side-by-sides. Access may involve private-property routes or Sundance Pit Road toward a Crown land trail. Pets must be leashed, and e-bikes are not allowed on trails.
