Nuchatlitz Park | British Columbia

Nuchatlitz Park covers the northwest tip of Nootka Island and many small island groups on the west coast of Vancouver Island. BC Parks says access is by boat or floatplane only.

The park is about 18 kilometres southwest of Zeballos, between Nuchatlitz and Esperanza inlets, with nearby communities including Zeballos, Tahsis, Gold River, and Nootka Island.

Why Visit Nuchatlitz Park

Nuchatlitz is a classic west coast marine park for sea kayakers, boaters, anglers, campers, divers, and wildlife watchers. Paddlers can explore protected waters among the island groups and pull out at random locations to camp.

Little Espinosa Inlet, on the road to Fair Harbour from Zeballos, is the nearest put-in for kayakers, with other options from Tahsis. The protected waters contain Chinook, coho, chum, and pink salmon as well as rockfish, making the area a popular saltwater sport fishing destination. Wildlife viewing can include gray whales, seals, sea lions, sea otters, numerous birds, tide pools, and intertidal life. Cold-water scuba diving opportunities are also listed.

Commercial kayak operators also offer tours to this area.

Things To Do

Sea kayak, boat, camp in random marine settings, fish with the proper licence, watch marine wildlife, study tide pools, swim without lifeguards, scuba dive if equipped, and hunt during open seasons where permitted.

Planning Notes

Use marine charts 3676 and 3662. The west side of the park has exposed hazards including high winds, tidal currents, and exposed rocks. Pets are not suitable because of wildlife issues and potential problems with wolves and bears.
