North Thompson Islands Park protects large, undisturbed floodplain islands in the North Thompson River. BC Parks says the area contains braided channels, sandbars, and river bank, with no camping or day-use facilities.
The park is 85 kilometres north of Kamloops on Highway 5 and can be reached only by boat or canoe.
The official page also includes winter safety guidance for visitors.
North Thompson Islands is a river-island park for experienced paddlers and self-sufficient visitors. A canoe or kayak is needed to access the river in this area, and BC Parks warns that sweepers and log jams may not always be visible in advance.
The park offers opportunities for fishing, hunting during open seasons, snowshoeing without designated trails, and excellent viewing of songbirds and waterfowl. Nearby remnants of a Hudson Bay Company trail on the east side of the river add historical context. The park was established April 30, 1996, and fish species in the North Thompson River include rainbow trout, salmon, and Dolly Varden.
Canoe or kayak if experienced, fish with the proper licence, watch waterfowl and songbirds, hunt during open seasons, snowshoe in winter without relying on marked trails, and study braided floodplain river habitat.
There are no developed facilities. Plan for cold, fast, changing water, hidden sweepers, log jams, and boat-only access. Bring navigation, safety gear, spare clothing, food, and communications. Pets must be leashed, backcountry areas are not suitable for dogs, and all fishing and hunting rules apply.
