Ningunsaw River Ecological Reserve | British Columbia

Ningunsaw River Ecological Reserve is beside Highway 37, 105 kilometres north of Stewart. BC Parks says it was established to preserve an elevational sequence of three biogeoclimatic zones in a transition between coastal and interior climates.

The reserve includes Boreal Altai Fescue Alpine, Engelmann Spruce-Subalpine Fir, and Interior Cedar-Hemlock zones in the Northern Skeena Mountains.

Why Visit Ningunsaw River Ecological Reserve

Ningunsaw River is a research and education reserve for understanding a protected climate-transition sequence. Ecological reserves are not intended for outdoor recreation, but this reserve is open for non-destructive activities such as hiking, nature observation, and photography.

The official page provides a reserve map and detailed description to support education and research. A visit should focus on careful observation of ecosystem change with elevation rather than camping, hunting, fishing, foraging, or motorized access. The adjacent Ningunsaw Park protects the lower elevation valley bottom, but the ecological reserve has stricter rules.

That pairing makes the area useful for understanding how valley, forest, subalpine, and alpine habitats change across a short distance. Travel with a light footprint.

Things To Do

Observe the river-to-alpine ecological sequence, photograph vegetation and landforms without collecting material, walk only where access is appropriate, and use official reserve documents to understand the coastal-interior transition.

Planning Notes

Hunting, fishing, camping, foraging, and motorized vehicles are prohibited. Research and educational activities require a permit. Maps are informational and should not be used for navigation, so bring proper planning, avoid habitat disturbance, leave natural materials in place, and pack out all waste.
