Mount Fernie Park is three kilometres south of Fernie on Highway 3, in the southern Rocky Mountains of the Kootenay Range. BC Parks describes the park as naturally beautiful, with diverse forests, vegetation, and wildlife.
Its location near the City of Fernie also puts restaurants, galleries, golf, and other community amenities close to the campground and trails. Fernie is the closest community.
Mount Fernie is a compact Kootenay base for camping, hiking, biking, and easy access to Fernie. Visitors can walk hiking trails and view the waterfall flowing from Lizard Creek. The area is also popular for mountain biking, and nearby Elk River fishing adds another reason to linger in the valley.
BC Parks notes that Lizard Creek provides limited fishing opportunity, while the park's location supports a unique variety of plant life. The mix of campground convenience, forest setting, waterfall scenery, and proximity to town makes this a practical stop for travellers who want a nature stay without being far from services.
Camp, hike signed trails, view Lizard Creek's waterfall, mountain bike where permitted, fish Lizard Creek with the proper licence, explore nearby Fernie, and use the park as a Kootenay stop close to Highway 3.
Pets must be leashed and kept out of beach areas and park buildings. Backcountry areas are not suitable for dogs because of wildlife issues. E-bikes are permitted only on signed or designated trails that meet BC Parks e-bike criteria, and all cyclists need helmets.
