Mount Assiniboine Park is west of the British Columbia-Alberta border, 48 kilometres southwest of Banff, with Banff National Park on the east and Kootenay National Park on the west. BC Parks says no roads pass through the park; land access is by trail only, with helicopter service also available through Mount Assiniboine Lodge.
The park is part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mount Assiniboine is world-renowned for lakes, glaciers, peaks, and alpine meadows. The mountain itself rises to 3,618 metres on the continental divide, while Magog Lake and Og Lake are extremely popular backcountry camping areas.
The park supports backcountry hiking, camping, mountain climbing, fishing, horseback riding, ski touring, and wildlife viewing. Climbers come for Mount Assiniboine and nearby peaks, but BC Parks stresses that only experienced, roped, properly equipped mountaineers should travel onto glaciers and snowfields. Wildlife may include elk, black and grizzly bears, mule deer, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and many bird species.
Hike into the core area, camp at reserved backcountry sites, use Naiset or Hind Hut reservations where applicable, climb if qualified, fish with the proper licence outside closed lakes, ski tour in winter, ride horseback with required permission, and watch wildlife from a distance.
This is remote backcountry with few services. Arrange supplies and transportation before visiting, carry overnight gear, and prepare for sudden weather, including summer lightning, hail, and snow. Fires are prohibited in the core area. Helicopter access to the core requires a valid camping reservation.
