Moore/McKenny/Whitmore Islands Ecological Reserve | British Columbia

Moore/McKenney/Whitmore Islands Ecological Reserve is off Aristazabal Island on the east side of Hecate Strait, about 100 kilometres northwest of Bella Bella. BC Parks says the reserve was established to preserve nesting sites for several species of colonial seabirds.

This is an ecological reserve, so conservation, research, and education come before recreation.

Why Visit Moore/McKenney/Whitmore Islands Ecological Reserve

The reserve protects a sensitive island setting in the Queen Charlotte Sound marine and terrestrial ecosections, within the Coastal Western Hemlock biogeoclimatic zone. Its value is focused on seabird nesting habitat rather than visitor facilities.

BC Parks notes that ecological reserves protect special natural ecosystems and support research and education. Public access is limited to non-destructive activities such as hiking, nature observation, and photography. Anyone interested in the reserve should approach it as a careful observation site, not a camping, fishing, or harvesting destination. A detailed reserve description is available from BC Parks to support education and research.

Things To Do

Observe seabird nesting habitat from an appropriate distance, take photographs without disturbing wildlife, and use official maps and reserve descriptions for learning. Keep movement slow and minimal, especially around shorelines and nesting areas.

Planning Notes

Hunting, fishing, camping, foraging, and motorized vehicles are prohibited. Research and educational activities require a permit. BC Parks maps are informational and should not be used for navigation, so visitors need proper marine navigation, weather judgment, and a strict leave-no-trace approach. No recreation facilities are listed by BC Parks for this reserve.
