Monkman Park | British Columbia

Monkman Park is on Kinuseo Falls Road, about 60 kilometres south of Tumbler Ridge. BC Parks describes a rough access road with washboard and potholes, so slow travel is part of the trip.

The park is known for Kinuseo Falls, backcountry hiking, waterfalls, lakes, rivers, and Rocky Mountain wilderness.

Why Visit Monkman Park

Kinuseo Falls is the headline feature. BC Parks calls it one of the great natural wonders of the province, with short trails to viewpoints, a nearby 42-site campground, and day-use access. The park also offers short hikes to Murray River viewpoints and a seven-kilometre one-way day hike along Monkman Lake Trail to the Murray River Crossing.

Backpackers can continue toward Monkman Lake on the 63-kilometre Monkman Lake Trail, which passes the Monkman Cascades, a series of ten waterfalls along Monkman Creek. Beyond Monkman Lake, the Monkman Pass Memorial Hiking Trail is unmaintained and only for experienced hikers with advanced navigation skills.

Things To Do

View Kinuseo Falls, camp near the falls, hike short trails, backpack the Monkman Lake route, fish for trout, char, grayling, or whitefish with the proper licence, watch wildlife, and mountain bike only as far as kilometre 12 on the Monkman Trail.

Planning Notes

Weather is unstable year-round, and summer can be cool, wet, and windy. Carry first aid, extra clothing, food, and navigation. Boil or filter water because of a boil-water advisory. Do not gather firewood inside the park, treat alpine areas as fragile, and note that snowmobile use is limited to permitted areas.
