Monckton Nii Łuutiksm Conservancy | British Columbia

Monckton Nii Luutiksm Conservancy is along the southwest end of Pitt Island on the east side of Principe Channel, about 30 kilometres southwest of Hartley Bay and 105 kilometres southwest of Kitimat. BC Parks says access is by boat, floatplane, or helicopter.

The conservancy provides safe boat anchorages and protects marine intertidal areas, small lakes, streams, estuaries, wetlands, forests, and salmon spawning habitats.

Why Visit Monckton Nii Luutiksm Conservancy

This is a remote North Coast marine conservancy for prepared boaters and paddlers. BC Parks lists several small bays and inlets within the protected area, including Monckton Inlet, Port Stephens, Buchan Inlet, Leavitt Lagoon, Cridge Lagoon, and Stephen Nelson Lake.

The area also contains culturally significant sites for local First Nations, including old village sites, traditional use areas, and archaeological sites. Wildlife viewing may include black bears, wolves, waterfowl, eagles, and salmon, while adjacent marine waters can hold humpback whales, killer whales, porpoises, sea lions, and harbour seals.

Things To Do

Anchor safely, paddle inlets and lagoons if experienced, camp in the backcountry, swim in cold ocean water, fish for salmon and groundfish with the proper licence, watch wildlife, scuba dive when conditions suit, and hunt during open seasons.

Planning Notes

There are no roads, trails, or facilities. Carry marine charts, tide and weather information, emergency communication, and self-rescue gear. BC Parks lists official marine chart references for this area. Backcountry areas are not suitable for pets because of bears and wolves, and all visits should respect cultural and archaeological sites.
