Monck Park sits on the western shore of Nicola Lake, 22 kilometres north of Merritt and 12 kilometres off Highway 5A by a narrow paved road. BC Parks describes it as a very popular, family-oriented campground in a hot, dry setting.
The park combines Nicola Lake recreation with protection for a Ponderosa pine and bunchgrass ecosystem and a volcanic rock cliff landscape.
Monck Park is a strong choice for a warm-weather lake trip in the Thompson region. The sandy beach is popular for swimming, Nicola Lake supports boating, waterskiing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing, and the campground gives families a base close to the water.
The park also has a five-kilometre self-guided interpretive hiking loop, plus an added 1.3 kilometres of trail east of the upper trails. Birdwatching is good in spring and fall, and BC Parks notes deer and bear sightings in fall. Nicola Lake has rainbow trout, kokanee, and many other fish species.
Camp, picnic, swim inside the marked area, paddle close to shore, fish with the proper licence, waterski or windsurf when conditions suit, walk the interpretive trail, watch birds, and look for wildlife from a respectful distance.
Sudden windstorms on Nicola Lake are a serious hazard for small boats, and the lake bottom drops off quickly near the swimming area. There are no lifeguards. Bring sun protection for the hot, dry climate, check for wood ticks from March to June, keep pets leashed and off beaches, and keep e-bikes off trails.
