Monashee Park is 111 kilometres north of Vernon, reached through Lumby, Cherryville, Sugar Lake Road, and Spectrum Creek Road. BC Parks describes it as an undeveloped mountain wilderness with old-growth cedar, spruce, and hemlock, alpine meadows, old rock formations, and the rugged Monashee Range.
Mount Fosthall rises to 2,697 metres, with Peters and Margie lakes below it.
Monashee Park offers a range of hikes from the improved Spectrum Lake access trail to demanding alpine routes. The Spectrum Creek Parking Lot trail is six kilometres one way and is the most common access, with hardpacked trail surface, boardwalks, bridges, and mixed forest.
From Spectrum Lake, hikers can continue up Little Peters Trail, Big Peters Trail, and alpine routes toward Margie Lake, Fawn Lake, South Caribou Pass, and Mount Fosthall. BC Parks also highlights Rainbow Falls viewing platforms, rainbow trout fishing, horseback riding, and climbing or scrambling on Mount Fosthall and Slate Mountain. Wildlife may include mountain caribou, wolverine, mule deer, pikas, moose, mountain goat, cougar, black bear, grizzly bear, and Northern Goshawk.
Hike to Spectrum Lake, continue to Peters and Margie lakes, view Rainbow Falls, fish for rainbow trout, plan advanced alpine routes, scramble or climb where appropriate, ride horseback, and watch wildlife from a distance.
Subalpine weather can change quickly and subzero temperatures are common. Dogs are not permitted because of caribou conflict risk, fires are limited to Spectrum Lake campground, and active logging occurs on access roads. Check road status and keep plans flexible.
