Maxtaktsm'aa/Union Passage Conservancy | British Columbia

Maxtaktsmaa/Union Passage Conservancy is a marine conservancy between Grenville Channel and Squally Channel, and between Farrant Island and Pitt Island. BC Parks places it about 15 kilometres southwest of Hartley Bay and 90 kilometres southwest of Kitimat.

Access is by boat or float plane only, with marine chart references for the approaches to Douglas Channel and the Otter Passage to McKay Reach.

Why Visit Maxtaktsmaa/Union Passage Conservancy

The conservancy protects intertidal and marine environments, fish and wildlife habitat, all of Hinton Island, and most of Tsimtack Lake. BC Parks says it provides safe and scenic anchorage for boaters travelling along the Inside Passage and adjoins Union Passage Marine Park to the northwest.

Paddlers can explore small islands, inlets, bays, and shorelines in usually sheltered water, with landing beaches available. Wildlife viewing may include black bears, wolves, waterfowl, eagles, salmon, humpback whales, killer whales, Dall's porpoises, Pacific white-sided dolphins, sea lions, and harbour seals.

Things To Do

Anchor while travelling the Inside Passage, canoe or kayak sheltered shorelines, swim in cold ocean water or Tsimtack Lake, fish for salmon or groundfish with the proper licence, scuba dive, watch wildlife, camp in wilderness style, and hunt during open seasons where permitted.

Planning Notes

There are no roads, trails, or facilities. Carry charts, communications, cold-water safety gear, drinking water, and all supplies. Keep pets leashed, respect archaeological sites and reserve lands, and check marine weather before entering exposed channels. Use landing beaches gently and keep campsites low impact because this is a wilderness conservancy.
