Maxhamish Lake Protected Area is in the Peace region, 125 kilometres north of Fort Nelson and 12 kilometres off the Liard Highway. BC Parks says there is no road access, so visitors need to plan around remote access and self-sufficiency.
The protected area can be reached by all-terrain vehicle or by snowmobile in winter, depending on conditions and permitted use.
This protected area offers a quiet northern lake experience for visitors who are prepared for backcountry travel. BC Parks lists fishing, wildlife viewing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and hunting during open seasons. Moose and deer may be seen foraging in the area.
The lake has a broad fish community. BC Parks lists arctic cisco, lake whitefish, least cisco, northern pike, slimy sculpin, spottail shiner, troutperch, walleye, and white sucker. The combination of remote access, wildlife habitat, and cold-water lake recreation makes it a specialized trip rather than a casual roadside stop.
Fish with the proper licence, canoe or kayak in calm conditions, swim without lifeguards, watch wildlife from a distance, hunt where open and permitted, travel by ATV where allowed, and consider snowmobile access in winter.
Potable water is not available. Carry first aid, extra food, clothing, navigation, and weather gear, treat surface water, cache food away from animals, make noise in bear habitat, pack out garbage, and keep pets leashed and under control. Plan travel around the absence of road access, and do not rely on nearby services once you leave the Liard Highway corridor.
