Maxhamish Lake Park | British Columbia

Maxhamish Lake Park is in the Peace region, 125 kilometres north of Fort Nelson and 12 kilometres off the Liard Highway. BC Parks says there is no road access and the closest community is Fort Nelson.

The park is a remote backcountry destination where visitors may arrive by all-terrain vehicle or, in winter, by snowmobile.

Why Visit Maxhamish Lake Park

Maxhamish Lake is for self-sufficient travellers who want fishing, wildlife viewing, paddling, and northern lake solitude. BC Parks notes that visitors are likely to see moose and deer foraging in the park, and the lake supports a diverse fish community.

Fish species listed by BC Parks include arctic cisco, lake whitefish, least cisco, northern pike, slimy sculpin, spottail shiner, troutperch, walleye, and white sucker. Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing are listed activities, but the setting is undeveloped and visitors need to bring the skills and supplies expected of a remote northern lake.

Things To Do

Fish with the proper licence, paddle or kayak in settled conditions, swim without lifeguards, watch for moose and deer, travel by ATV where permitted, and use snowmobile access in winter when conditions allow.

Planning Notes

Bring drinking water and treat any surface water. Carry first aid, extra clothing, food, and weather protection, store food away from bears and other animals, pack out garbage, keep pets leashed, and use camp stoves because fires are discouraged. Because there is no road access, confirm ATV or winter snowmobile conditions before committing to the trip, and leave a detailed route plan.
