Mara Meadows Ecological Reserve | British Columbia

Mara Meadows Ecological Reserve is in the Larch Hills, about 17 kilometres north of Enderby. BC Parks says the reserve was established to protect a unique calcareous fen and its diverse flora, including several rare orchids.

This is an ecological reserve, so the visit should be framed around conservation, research, and education rather than ordinary recreation.

Why Visit Mara Meadows Ecological Reserve

Mara Meadows protects a wetland system that is unusual enough to be managed under ecological reserve rules. BC Parks identifies the area with the Interior Cedar-Hemlock biogeoclimatic zone and the Shuswap Basin and Shuswap River Highland terrestrial ecosections.

The reserve is open to the public for non-destructive activities such as hiking, nature observation, and photography, but its purpose is the protection of special natural ecosystems. Visitors interested in botany, wetland ecology, and careful field observation can use the official map and BC Parks supporting materials to understand the fen without disturbing it.

BC Parks also provides a plant list and detailed description for education and research, and research or educational activities require a permit.

Things To Do

Walk carefully where appropriate, observe the fen and plant communities without collecting anything, photograph the landscape, and use the official reserve materials for education. Keep any visit low-impact and short.

Planning Notes

Hunting, fishing, camping, foraging, and motorized vehicles are prohibited. Maps are informational rather than legal navigation tools, so bring your own navigation and stay off saturated or fragile wetland ground. Do not enter the fen if conditions would leave tracks or damage plants.
