Kokanee Creek Park | British Columbia

Kokanee Creek Park is on Highway 3A in southern British Columbia, about 19 kilometres east of Nelson or 12 kilometres from Balfour after the Kootenay Lake ferry. BC Parks describes more than a kilometre of sandy beaches and four campgrounds.

Special features include Kokanee Creek canyon, old-growth western cedar and grand fir, the Kokanee spawning channel and viewing platform, and a redfish run from mid-August to mid-September.

Why Visit Kokanee Creek Park

Kokanee Creek Park is a full-service Kootenay Lake camping and beach base. The park includes an adventure playground, visitor centre, boat launch, group campsite, viewing platform, hiking trails, and nearby marina.

Hikers have 9.5 kilometres of easy walking trails around the campgrounds, visitor centre, spawning channel, shoreline, and delta. The Canyon Trail follows the east side of Kokanee Creek through mature cedar and hemlock to stairs and a terraced canyon viewpoint, while Pine and Woodland trails loop through yellow pine and birch.

Beach time is a major draw at Sandspit and Redfish day-use areas, but the beach is unsupervised and Kootenay Lake weather can change quickly. The Kokanee Creek nature centre operates from mid-May to mid-September with environmental education, WiFi, coffee, and a gift shop.

Things To Do

Plan around frontcountry camping, group camping, sandy beaches, swimming, paddling the delta, boat launch use, canyon trails, spawning-channel viewing, the redfish run, playground time, and nature-centre programs.

Planning Notes

Parents should be careful near the canyon and canyon viewpoint. Winds and weather on Kootenay Lake can change quickly, and Friends Campground has a limited number of electrical hook-ups.
