Kitson Island Marine Park | British Columbia

Kitson Island Marine Park includes Kitson Island and Kitson Islet at the mouth of the Skeena River, five kilometres south of Port Edward. BC Parks says the small sandy island is popular with kayakers and other small craft users for wilderness camping.

The park is managed by the Prince Rupert Port Authority.

Why Visit Kitson Island Marine Park

Kitson Island Marine Park is a marine stop for experienced paddlers and small-craft travellers moving through the Skeena River mouth. BC Parks describes it as a popular overnight stop for paddlers travelling between the mainland and Porcher Island. Landing beaches are present, backcountry camping is permitted, and kayak rentals are available in Prince Rupert.

Fishing is another draw, with excellent tidal water opportunities for salmon and groundfish. Wildlife viewing can also be strong: BC Parks notes large herds of seals and sea lions resting on sandbanks while following salmon heading for the Skeena River.

The setting demands caution. Water around the island can be rough, especially when wind opposes current, and there is no fresh water source on the island.

Things To Do

Plan around kayak touring, small-craft landings, wilderness camping, tidal fishing for salmon and groundfish, seal and sea lion viewing from a respectful distance, marine photography, and route planning between the mainland and Porcher Island.

Planning Notes

Bring all drinking water, as potable water is not available and there is no fresh water source. There are no developed trails, and pets should be controlled if brought into the backcountry setting.
