Jesse Falls Protected Area protects a small area around a 10-metre waterfall that drains directly from Jesse Lake into the ocean. BC Parks describes the falls as a scenic focal point along Douglas Channel.
The protected area is about 25 kilometres southeast of Kitimat on the west side of Kitimat Arm and is accessible by boat only.
Jesse Falls Protected Area is a focused marine-and-lake stop for boaters travelling Kitimat Arm and Douglas Channel. The unusual appeal is the short connection between lake, falls, and ocean: Jesse Lake drains straight over the falls to saltwater.
BC Parks lists swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hunting during open seasons, and year-round access. Swimming is possible in Jesse Lake and in the ocean, but the water is cold all season. Jesse Lake has good canoeing and kayaking opportunities, though paddlers should avoid the area near the falls.
The protected area was designated in 2005 following Kalum Land and Resource Management Plan recommendations, adding conservation status to a small but distinctive Douglas Channel feature. BC Parks provides both a park map and a Douglas Channel area map.
Plan around boat-only access, viewing the 10-metre falls, Jesse Lake canoeing and kayaking, cold-water swimming, fishing where regulations allow, Douglas Channel scenery, winter access awareness, and hunting where open and permitted.
Avoid paddling near the falls. Carry marine charts and safety gear, check weather before travelling Kitimat Arm, and confirm fishing and hunting regulations. There are no indications of developed facilities, so arrive self-sufficient.
