Ilgachuz Range Ecological Reserve | British Columbia

Ilgachuz Range Ecological Reserve is about 35 kilometres north of Anahim Lake in the Chilcotin district. BC Parks says it was established to preserve extensive and diverse alpine-subalpine ecosystems in an isolated massif of volcanic origin.

The reserve includes Boreal Altai Fescue Alpine and Engelmann Spruce-Subalpine Fir biogeoclimatic zones.

Why Visit Ilgachuz Range Ecological Reserve

Ilgachuz Range Ecological Reserve is for careful visitors interested in alpine and subalpine ecosystems, volcanic landforms, and low-impact observation. BC Parks says ecological reserves support research and education and are not intended for outdoor recreation, although this reserve is open for non-destructive hiking, nature observation, and photography.

The reserve's value comes from the protected massif and its Western Chilcotin Upland setting. Visitors should use the official map and detailed ecological reserve description to understand the landscape before travelling, then keep any field visit strictly observational. Those materials help explain why an isolated volcanic massif receives ecological-reserve protection.

Because hunting, fishing, camping, foraging, and motorized vehicles are prohibited, the reserve should not be used as a general backcountry recreation base. Treat it as a protected study area. The reserve is a place to learn from, not to consume or modify.

Things To Do

Plan around non-destructive hiking, alpine and subalpine nature observation, volcanic landscape photography, map review, and reading the detailed reserve description for education or research context.

Planning Notes

Research and educational activities require a permit. Consumptive activities and motorized vehicles are prohibited. Maps are for information only and should not be relied on as navigation tools.
