Herald Park is on the west shore of the Salmon Arm of Shuswap Lake, 14 kilometres east of the Trans-Canada Highway at Tappen. BC Parks describes a popular 79-hectare camping and day-use park with beach, forested uplands, frontcountry camping, a boat launch, and a large day-use area.
It is also a practical base for exploring the Shuswap area.
Herald Park combines lake recreation with short trails and a waterfall walk. The self-guided nature trail follows Reinecker Creek to Margaret Falls, while the 2.5-kilometre Upper Canyon Trail leads to lake views with some rough sections.
Shuswap Lake is the centre of summer activity. The park has a large buoyed swimming area, canoeing, kayaking, waterskiing, windsurfing, scuba diving, and year-round fishing. BC Parks notes 19 fish species in the lake, including lake trout, rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, kokanee, burbot, and whitefish.
Birdwatching is another official highlight, with 70 bird species documented in Herald Canyon. The canyon leading to Margaret Falls also protects a unique ecosystem of flowers, trees, and shrubs. The park was established in 1975 after earlier recreation use grew through the 1950s.
Plan around frontcountry camping, beach swimming, Margaret Falls, Upper Canyon hiking, boat launch use, paddling, fishing, waterskiing, windsurfing, scuba diving, birdwatching, road cycling, and the signed pet-play area.
Theft is a recurring issue, so lock valuables out of sight. Boat traffic is heavy on Shuswap Lake; swim only in designated areas. E-bikes are restricted to park roads and motorized-use areas.
