Halkett Bay Marine Park | British Columbia

Halkett Bay Marine Park is on the southeastern shore of Gambier Island in Howe Sound, about 15 kilometres from Horseshoe Bay, 40 kilometres from Vancouver marinas, and 10 kilometres from Lions Bay. BC Parks describes rugged glaciated coastline, steep mountains, islands, and protected water close to major coastal communities.

The park has one pit toilet and boat-access camping.

Why Visit Halkett Bay Marine Park

Halkett Bay Marine Park is popular with boaters for day use, overnight moorage, wilderness camping, kayaking, swimming, picnicking, hiking, fishing, and diving. Pebble Beach gives canoe and kayak access, and there are three developed boat-access campsites with picnic tables.

The main land objective is Mount Artaban. BC Parks describes a moderately strenuous 10-kilometre day hike, taking about six hours with 610 metres of elevation gain. The summit gives wide Howe Sound views toward features such as the Tantalus and Garibaldi ranges, Bowen Island, and the San Juan Islands. A rough trail also leads to Brigade Bay.

The park protects rocky tidal coastline, a small islet, beaches, and the Halkett Point glass sponge reef. That reef creates special fishing restrictions and also makes the area notable for science and scuba diving.

Things To Do

Plan around boating, boat-access camping, kayaking, cold-water ocean swimming, Mount Artaban hiking, Brigade Bay walking, picnicking, wildlife viewing, scuba diving, snorkelling, and tidal fishing where regulations allow.

Planning Notes

Bring drinking water and pack out all garbage. Campfires are not permitted. Bottom-contact fishing is prohibited around Halkett Point to protect glass sponge reefs, and tying to the float is permitted only for dinghies.
