Plan Hai Lake - Mount Herman Park near Terrace with old-growth forest, bog habitat, short lake trails, camping, fishing, swimming, and winter use.
Hai Lake - Mount Herman Park is about 15 kilometres south of Terrace on the west side of Beam Station Road. BC Parks says the park protects regionally significant remnant old-growth forest and bog ecosystems while offering local day hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting.
Hai Lake is reached from South Thunderbird Forest Service Road, while Herman Lake is accessed from Beam Station Road.
Why Visit Hai Lake - Mount Herman Park
Hai Lake - Mount Herman Park is a close-to-Terrace option for short forest trails and small-lake recreation. The Hai Lake Trail is about 900 metres and takes roughly 15 minutes through old-growth forest to reach the lake. At Hai Lake, BC Parks lists two campsites, two picnic tables, two fire rings, a pit toilet, and a small lake dock maintained in cooperation with the Terrace Scouts.
Herman Lake has a shorter access route with 82 metres of raised boardwalk leading to a viewing platform on the southeast side of the lake. Swimming is possible in both lakes in summer, and canoeing and fishing for cutthroat trout are listed for both Herman and Hai lakes.
The conservation values are sensitive. Herman Lake wetland has salmon spawning and rearing habitat, while bog soils and dwarf shrubs can be damaged by trampling or vehicles.
Things To Do
Plan around short hiking, Hai Lake camping, lake swimming, canoeing, cutthroat trout fishing, Herman Lake boardwalk viewing, snowshoeing, ice skating, ice fishing when lakes are safely frozen, and seasonal hunting.
Planning Notes
South Thunderbird Road can be rough and unsuitable for two-wheel-drive vehicles. Stay on trails and boardwalks to protect old-growth forest and bog habitat. Check ice safety before winter skating or fishing.
