Galiano Island Ecological Reserve | British Columbia

Galiano Island Ecological Reserve is two kilometres southeast of the settlement of North Galiano in the Gulf Islands. BC Parks says it was established to preserve a unique bog in the coastal Douglas-fir zone.

Ecological reserves support research and education rather than outdoor recreation.

Why Visit Galiano Island Ecological Reserve

Galiano Island Ecological Reserve is open to the public for non-destructive activities such as hiking, nature observation, and photography. BC Parks prohibits hunting, fishing, camping, foraging, and other consumptive activities, and motorized vehicles are not allowed.

The reserve's ecological context is specific and sensitive. BC Parks lists the biogeoclimatic zone as Coastal Douglas-fir, the terrestrial ecosection as Southern Gulf Islands, and the marine ecosection as Strait of Georgia. A plant list and detailed reserve description are available for education and research, giving visitors official resources to review before any study.

Because the official reason for protection is a unique bog, visitors should treat the reserve as a fragile learning site rather than a recreation objective. Research or educational activities require a permit through the official process.

Things To Do

Plan around non-destructive hiking, careful nature observation, photography, bog ecosystem learning, Coastal Douglas-fir context, Southern Gulf Islands study, Strait of Georgia context, plant-list review, official map context, and permit-based research or education planning carefully.

Planning Notes

Do not camp, hunt, fish, forage, or use motorized vehicles in the reserve. Any maps listed by BC Parks are informational only and should not be used for navigation or legal boundaries near North Galiano.
