French Beach Park | British Columbia

French Beach Park sits on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, 20 kilometres west of Sooke on Highway 14 and about 11 kilometres from Jordan River. BC Parks highlights a sand and pebble beach, forest trails, picnic lawns, ocean swimming, whale watching, and year-round vehicle-accessible camping.

Facilities include a picnic and day-use area, pit toilets, fresh water, and a sani-station outside winter.

Why Visit French Beach Park

French Beach is a classic south Vancouver Island base for camping, beach walking, short forest trails, wildlife watching, saltwater fishing, and windsurfing. About two kilometres of maintained trails pass through salt marsh and second-growth Douglas fir, Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and western red cedar before connecting with shoreline walks.

The 1,600 metre beach offers views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Olympic Mountains. Gray whales pass in spring and fall migrations, resident killer whales can be seen offshore, and the park is also good for observing seals, sea lions, bald eagles, ospreys, and seabirds.

Canoeing and kayaking are not recommended because of strong ocean currents. There is no boat launch in the park.

Things To Do

Plan around frontcountry camping, group camping, beach picnics, forest hiking, cold ocean swimming, whale watching, birdwatching, saltwater fishing with current regulations, interpretive programs, roadway cycling, windsurfing, and winter visits with limited services.

Planning Notes

Check tide tables for Sooke, leash pets, keep them out of beach areas and buildings, bring good beach footwear, and remember the nearest boat launches are near Jordan River or Sooke.
