Exchamsiks River Protected Area is 56 kilometres west of Terrace on Highway 16, where coastal Sitka spruce rainforest towers over the confluence of the Exchamsiks and Skeena Rivers. BC Parks describes a short self-guided nature trail, nearby salmon fishing, and two day-use areas.
The west side of the river has a single paved boat launch for public use when the road is snow-free.
This protected area is closely tied to Exchamsiks River Park and works as a river-forest day-use stop. The two kilometre loop nature trail has an easy grade and passes through old-growth forest, giving visitors a short interpretive walk in a coastal rainforest setting.
The protected area provides access to the Skeena River and upper Exchamsiks River for canoeing or kayaking. Fishing is available in both rivers, and hunting is allowed during open season under provincial regulations. Bicycles must stay on roadways, and e-bikes are not allowed on trails except where restricted to park roads or permitted motorized areas.
The closest communities are Terrace, Port Edward, and Prince Rupert, making this a useful stop along the Highway 16 corridor.
Plan around the two kilometre old-growth nature trail, Sitka spruce rainforest viewing, river photography, canoeing, kayaking, Skeena and Exchamsiks River fishing, roadway cycling, leashed-pet walks, and seasonal hunting where permitted.
Day-use areas are open May 15 to October 1, camping is prohibited on the east side, and the access road to the boat launch is not plowed. Check fishing and hunting regulations before travel.
