Elk Valley Park is a scenic, quiet, sheltered picnic area close to the highway, 18 kilometres north of Fernie. BC Parks says it provides a chance to enjoy the natural features of the Elk Valley and the riparian habitat of the Elk River near a major tourist route.
The park is signed by the Ministry of Transportation as the Olson Rest Area, not by formal provincial park signage.
Elk Valley Park works best as a short road-trip stop with mountain views, picnic space, river context, and fishing access. BC Parks highlights commanding Rocky Mountain views, especially to the north of the park, and says the Elk River forms the park's northern boundary.
The only facilities are at the highway rest stop and are not maintained by BC Parks. Those facilities include a parking lot, picnic tables, and wheelchair accessible pit toilets. Potable water is not available, so this is a stop to use thoughtfully rather than a full-service park.
Fishing in the Elk River is described as excellent, with anglers directed to the Freshwater Sport Fishing synopsis for regulations. Hunting is also allowed during open season under provincial hunting rules, and pets must be leashed and kept out of park buildings.
Plan around highway rest-area picnicking, Elk River fishing with the required licence, Rocky Mountain views, riparian-habitat observation, short photography stops, leashed-pet breaks, and seasonal hunting where permitted.
Bring drinking water, check fishing and hunting regulations, and look for Olson Rest Area signage rather than formal park signage. Respect that the rest stop facilities are not maintained by BC Parks.
