East Redonda Island Ecological Reserve is a BC Parks ecological reserve 40 kilometres northwest of Powell River, between Homfray Channel and Pendrell Sound. BC Parks says it was established to conserve representative coastal ecosystems in two biogeoclimatic zones, principally for forestry research in first and second growth forest stands.
Ecological reserves support research and education rather than outdoor recreation.
East Redonda Island is appropriate for non-destructive public activities such as hiking, nature observation, and photography. BC Parks is also clear about the limits: hunting, fishing, camping, foraging, and other consumptive activities are prohibited, and motorized vehicles are not allowed anywhere in the reserve.
The reserve's education value comes from its protected coastal forest setting. BC Parks lists Coastal Mountain-heather Alpine, Coastal Western Hemlock, and Mountain Hemlock biogeoclimatic zones, with Johnstone Strait and Outer Fjordland terrestrial ecosections and Johnstone Strait as the marine ecosection.
Researchers and educators have a more formal path. BC Parks provides a detailed reserve description for education and research, and research or educational activities require a permit.
Plan around non-destructive hiking, nature observation, coastal forest photography, official map review, ecological learning, forestry research context, Homfray Channel and Pendrell Sound orientation, and permit-based research or education where authorized by BC Parks.
Do not plan to camp, hunt, fish, forage, or use motorized vehicles in the reserve. Any listed maps are for information only, so they should not be treated as legal-boundary documents or navigation tools for travel.
