Duu Guusd Heritage Site/Conservancy | British Columbia

Duu Guusd Heritage Site/Conservancy is a BC Parks heritage site and conservancy on the northwest corner of Graham Island, Haida Gwaii, about 30 kilometres west of Old Massett and Masset. BC Parks says Duu Guusd means "West Coast" in the Haida language.

The terrestrial component covers 143,593 hectares, and the marine foreshore component covers 84,173 hectares.

Why Visit Duu Guusd Heritage Site/Conservancy

Duu Guusd is a large Haida Gwaii protected coast for visitors planning around fishing, old-growth hiking, beachcombing, wilderness camping, hunting, cultural heritage, and remote natural values. Naden Harbour and Henslung Cove on Langara Island are centres for fishing lodge resorts, while Rennell Sound is the only west coast area on Graham Island accessible by vehicle.

Hiking options listed by BC Parks include the 10 kilometre return Riley Creek trail through old-growth forest to a secluded beach, plus Conehead, Gregory Beach, and Bonanza Beach for hiking and beachcombing.

Cultural and conservation values are extensive. BC Parks lists 88 recorded archaeological sites, at least 491 culturally modified trees, shell middens, cultural depressions, canoes, burial sites, house depressions, and other heritage items. The conservancy also has 18 estuaries, kelp forests, eelgrass, fish-bearing streams, peregrine falcon nest sites, and important bird habitat.

Things To Do

Plan around Riley Creek Trail, beachcombing, old-growth forest hiking, saltwater fishing areas, Haida cultural-value respect, Haida Watchman context near Kiusta, wildlife viewing, estuary and coastline study, wilderness camping, and seasonal hunting.

Planning Notes

Respect cultural sites and ongoing Haida traditional use. Check tides for beach hikes, review wildlife safety and hunting regulations, and plan carefully around remote west coast conditions, introduced mammals, and invasive sowthistle concerns noted by BC Parks.
