Denman Island Protected Area | British Columbia

Denman Island Protected Area is a BC Parks protected area on Denman Island off the east coast of Vancouver Island. BC Parks says it was established through private land acquisition and Crown land transfers.

The protected area lies within the relatively rare Coastal Douglas-fir biogeoclimatic zone.

Why Visit Denman Island Protected Area

Denman Island Protected Area is a habitat and restoration-focused place for visitors researching Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystems, wetland recovery, and species-at-risk protection. BC Parks says it includes the Chicadee watershed and areas important to Taylor checkerspot butterfly habitat.

The official page highlights a wetland makeover in Denman Island Park and Protected Area. BC Parks and partners have restored wetlands and wet meadows affected by past logging, hydrology changes, and invasive plants. Work includes native planting, invasive removal, and wetland rebuilding.

The project involved local residents, the K'omoks First Nation as a cultural monitor during construction, and a BC Wildlife Federation Wetlands Institute that provided an educational opportunity for participants. BC Parks also notes support from the Taylor's Checkerspot Butterfly Recovery Project Team and the Licence Plate Program.

Things To Do

Plan around map review, low-impact nature observation, Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystem learning, wetland and wet meadow restoration awareness, butterfly habitat respect, Chicadee watershed context, and careful photography from appropriate public routes.

Planning Notes

Use the protected area boundary map and butterfly reserve and provisional trail map for planning. Respect restoration work, avoid disturbing wetlands or butterfly habitat, stay alert for posted guidance, and clean footwear to reduce invasive plant spread.
