Daawuuxusda Conservancy | British Columbia

Daawuuxusda Conservancy is a BC Parks conservancy on the west-central coast of Haida Gwaii, 25 kilometres west of Queen Charlotte, Skidegate, and Sandspit. BC Parks says the people of the Haida Nation have occupied and collected food and materials from this area since time immemorial.

The conservancy is part of an archipelago-wide protected-areas system on Haida Gwaii.

Why Visit Daawuuxusda Conservancy

Daawuuxusda is a remote wilderness coast for visitors planning around heritage awareness, kayaking, boat travel, anchorage, fishing, wildlife viewing, wilderness camping, hiking, and hunting. The terrestrial component covers 70,490 hectares from the southern edge of Rennell Sound and Graham Island along western Moresby Island to Tasu Sound.

The marine and foreshore component covers 45,785 hectares at the edge of the continental shelf. BC Parks highlights surfgrass, eelgrass beds, kelp forests, and nine estuaries that spill into some of the most productive marine habitat on Haida Gwaii.

Cultural values are central. Seventeen recorded archaeological sites include culturally modified trees, a pictograph, shell midden, human remains, a mortuary pole, house posts, and other cultural items. The conservancy also supports the ongoing continuance of Haida culture through traditional uses.

Things To Do

Plan around remote kayaking, boat travel, anchorage locations, wilderness camping, hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, heritage-site respect, marine habitat observation, and seasonal hunting under current provincial regulations.

Planning Notes

Expect a remote Haida Gwaii setting with sensitive cultural and ecological values. Check wildlife safety and fishing or hunting rules, avoid disturbing archaeological sites, and plan around introduced mammals and invasive sowthistle concerns noted by BC Parks.
