Cougar Canyon Ecological Reserve | British Columbia

Cougar Canyon Ecological Reserve is a BC Parks ecological reserve 13 kilometres south of Vernon, east of Kalamalka Lake. BC Parks says it was established to preserve representative Interior Douglas-fir ecosystems, together with a chain of small lakes and associated wetlands.

The reserve is in the Interior Douglas-fir biogeoclimatic zone and the Northern Okanagan Basin terrestrial ecosection.

Why Visit Cougar Canyon Ecological Reserve

Cougar Canyon is a conservation and research reserve rather than a recreation park. BC Parks explains that ecological reserves protect special natural ecosystems and support research and education. They are not intended for outdoor recreation.

The reserve's interest is its combination of dry Interior Douglas-fir ecosystems, small lakes, wetlands, and Okanagan basin setting near Kalamalka Lake. Visitors researching regional ecology can use the official map and detailed reserve description for education and study.

Unlike some ecological reserve pages that specifically invite non-destructive public visits, this page emphasizes the reserve's protection, research, and education purpose. Consumptive activities such as hunting, fishing, camping, and foraging are prohibited. Motorized vehicles are not allowed, and research or educational activities require a permit from BC Parks.

Things To Do

Plan around off-site research, official map review, reading the detailed reserve description, low-impact ecological learning, and permit-based research or education where authorized by BC Parks.

Planning Notes

Do not plan a recreation visit, camp, hunt, fish, forage, or use motorized vehicles in the reserve. Treat maps as information only, not legal boundaries or navigation tools, and apply for a permit before research or organized educational activity.
