Codville Lagoon Marine Park | British Columbia

Codville Lagoon Marine Park is a small BC Parks marine park on King Island in Fitz Hugh Sound, 80 kilometres west of Bella Coola. BC Parks says it offers scenic all-weather anchorage and an unmaintained trail to Sagar Lake.

The park's special feature is the red sand beach along Sagar Lake, reached by boat and then a 15 to 20 minute walk.

Why Visit Codville Lagoon Marine Park

Codville Lagoon is a marine destination for boaters and experienced sea kayakers travelling the central coast. The lagoon provides anchorage, while Sagar Lake adds a short inland objective with warm-water swimming and an unusual red sand beach.

The Sagar Lake trail starts from the north end of the lagoon. BC Parks describes it as difficult, wet, unmaintained, about 15 to 20 minutes long, and gaining 100 metres; rubber boots are highly recommended. Swimming is best at Sagar Lake, though there is no roped-off swimming area.

The area is also rich in marine and shore wildlife. Visitors may see orcas, humpback whales, Pacific white-sided dolphins, sea lions, Columbia black-tailed deer, mink, black bears, and wolves. BC Parks asks boaters to keep distance from marine mammals.

Things To Do

Plan around all-weather anchorage, experienced sea kayaking, the Sagar Lake trail, red sand beach visits, warm-water swimming, rainbow trout fishing at Sagar Lake, marine wildlife viewing, and cultural-site respect.

Planning Notes

Access is by boat only, and the closest supplies are at Bella Bella. Bring drinking water because potable water is not available. The central coast is closed to shellfish harvesting because of red tide, and BC Parks notes this is a significant place for the Heiltsuk People where artifacts must not be disturbed.
